Cooking With CBD
CBD is cropping up in everything from cocktails to cookies. People are turning to this holistic ingredient for help with anxiety, sleep, chronic pain, and a bevy of other ailments. The good news for CBD enthusiasts? Cooking with CBD is easier than you might think, whether you’re craving sweet or savory treats! That is, once you get the hang of it. Here’s our top tips n’ tricks to get you off on the right foot.*
1. Try Both Sweet & Savory CBD Cooking
Most CBD recipes focus on sweets and baked goods. (Ahem, guilty!). This is because, generally speaking, its easier to cover up herbal or medicinal the taste of CBD with sugar. However, prepared the right way, savory CBD dishes can be just as delicious.*
2. Choose The Right Carrier
CBD needs to be infused into a fat or oil-based ingredient before it can be used in your cooking. That means ingredients like butter, ghee, or coconut oil. In some recipes, alcoholic spirits can replace the fat component. Stick to hard liquors like vodka, whiskey, or mezcal. Wine and beer won’t act as great carriers because they’re water-based.*
3. Temperature Matters
Sure, temperature matters with any recipe or ingredient. But it’s especially important when cooking with CBD. While it’s true that warming CBD oil can increase the CBD’s effectiveness, higher temperatures will actually kill off the active components. At temperatures higher than 320-356 degrees Fahrenheit, CBD will begin to evaporate. Keeping this in mind, be careful not to place your CBD oil or CBD butter on direct heat. Heating the oil at too high a temp will result in the loss of terpenes, which will decrease the CBD’s overall effect. On the flavor side of things, overheating CBD can bring out more of a bitter taste.*
4. Start Small
When you’re first starting out cooking with CBD, it’s easy to get a little heavy handed. Be mindful of how much CBD you’re adding to a recipe, as this will affect both the dose and the taste. Less is more, at least when you’re starting out!*
5. Stir & Stir Again
Whatever you’re cookin’ make sure you’re stirring – more than you think you need to. This will ensure that your CBD is evenly distributed throughout the whole batch, so that each bite offers equal potency.*
6. Have Fun!
This goes without saying, but have fun! As you get more comfortable using CBD in your cooking, you can start to experiment and adjust recipes to create custom CBD-infused dishes of your own!
